The lighthouse, or Menara in Arabic, is a three-story monument crowned with two imperial ornaments at its summit. Its construction on the African shore of the Strait of Gibraltar was decided after the tragic shipwreck of the training frigate Dona Isabel in 1860, off the coast of Tangier, where 250 young Brazilian naval cadets lost their lives.

The Cap Spartel Lighthouse stands about 14 kilometers west of Tangier, marking the exact point where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of Africa’s most iconic lighthouses and symbolizes the southern entrance of the Strait of Gibraltar on the Atlantic side.

It is impossible to speak about the history of Morocco or Tangier in particular without mentioning this magnificent landmark. That’s why Riad Sultana chose to name one of its rooms Menara, in tribute to this timeless monument.
